Born in the pink city of Jaipur, Rajasthan, in northwest India, Vatsala started cooking for her family when she was 10 years old. “My grandmother taught me how to cook. From her, I mastered the difficult art of rolling chapati (bread). Being part of a huge family, I learned to prepare traditional Indian dishes with the help of my older sisters.”


The young girl grew up to become a university professor, naval wife, loving mom and legend among family and friends for her delicious and memorable food get-togethers.  “Cooking has always been a passion. Whether I cook for 2 people or for 100, the love and care I put into it is the same.”


Valsala has always been very conscious about what she is eating and the impact it has on one’s overall well-being. “When I cook, I pay attention to everything about the meal—the ingredients, the cooking temperatures —I even prepare freshly ground spices to mix in.” 


In founding Shefs, Valsala’s daughter Niharika invites you to share her mother’s holistic approach to well-being through food by savoring the same authentic Indian sauces and curries she grew up enjoying.
